How to Make a Bargain from a Cheap Airsoft Gun
There are tons of cheap airsoft guns out there, some of them cheaper than others. Think of beginner guns like AEGs from Lancer Tactical or G&G like the G&G Raider and ARP9, or airsoft pistols like Elite Force/Umarex Glocks.
These are good airsoft guns and not cheap in quality, but in terms of price, they’re definitely on the more affordable end of the spectrum. We can likely agree on that.
But if you’re looking for a bargain in a beginner airsoft gun, you can change a few parts on most any of them to improve performance – parts such as these.
Replace the Spring
This applies to AEGs and spring airsoft guns. The main spring is the primary determinant of power and FPS in your airsoft gun.
Cheap or not, replacing the spring with a heavier alternative will increase power and FPS, which can significantly boost the performance of your AEG.
This alone is one of the most impactful upgrades you can make to a cheap airsoft gun.
Replace the Motor
This applies only to AEGs, but after replacing the spring, you may want to turn your eyes on the motor.
There are two basic types of motor upgrades, high-speed and high-torque motors. The one that’s best for you will be determined by whether you want more power or a higher ROF.
Replacing the motor can, however, boost both.
Replace the Trigger/Install a MOSFET
The trigger unit itself is mostly a cosmetic thing, but installing a MOSFET, or metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistor, can seriously upgrade the performance of any electric airsoft gun.
A MOSFET bypasses the battery when wiring the trigger, protecting the trigger contacts from excessively high voltage.
This in turn improves trigger response and can improve ROF, all while protecting the lifespan of your trigger.
Replace the Barrel
If your airsoft gun does not come with a tight-bore barrel, replace that too. Tight-bore barrels can substantially improve range and accuracy.
If you can, utilize a tight-bore barrel like a Maple Leaf Crazy Jet, which creates a cushion of air around the BB as it exits the barrel, stabilizing it in flight.
Also, opt for a stainless steel barrel instead of a brass alloy one, as stainless steel will better resist corrosion.
Add a Muzzle Device Like a Tracer Unit or Airsoft Amp
Adding a muzzle device like a tracer unit will help you shoot more accurately in the dark, while also making it easier for you to cover territory with suppressive fire.
Another cool airsoft accessory is an airsoft amp (amplifier) which is exactly what it sounds like, no pun intended.
Replace the Handguard/Install a Vert Grip
Not a fan of the handguard your cheap airsoft gun came with? Install a new handguard with an integrated rail system and get to work adding airsoft attachments.
You can also improve handling for some AEGs by adding a folding vert grip to the bottom of the handguard.
Replace the Stock
Easier said than done for some models but you may also be able to replace a fixed stock with a folding or modular replacement that will improve handing, fit and performance.
Add Airsoft Accessories (WMLs, Lasers, Optics, Etc.)
Finally, the easiest and least invasive way to transform any cheap airsoft gun is with airsoft accessories, like lights, lasers, scopes, folding iron sights, or red dot sights that will improve the platform’s viability in the dark, off-hand and reflexive shooting, and accuracy even at greater ranges.
